LETTERS, Page 7Spike Lee's Got It
Hurrah for director Spike Lee and his film Do the Right Thing
(PROFILE, July 17)! Lee will go down in history, at least among
black people, but as neither an Uncle Tom nor a sellout who
exploits his people, vanishes and lives happily ever after in
Tinseltown, U.S.A. Instead Lee represents the kind of grass-roots
ideology that has been lacking in our communities.
K. Kwame Afari
New York City
Your reviewer criticizes the way Lee's characters "vault from
sympathetic to venomous in the wink of a whim" (CINEMA, July 3).
This is just the point Lee was trying to make: real people under
tense, emotional, untenable circumstances can indeed make the leap
from love to hate.
Audrey G. Fleher
